When their thirty minutes were up, Caleb followed Mair to the chopper. The two men were standing outside waiting. At the sight of him both men’s eyes had grown so wide he’d thought their eyeballs were going to fall right out of their heads.

A second later, the bodyguard sent to get Mair sprang into action. He grabbed Mair and pushed him into the pilot’s hands. “Get the prince out of here.”

As the man pulled out his gun and pointed it at Caleb, Mair yelled, “Leave my mate alone.”

Both men stopped and their jaws dropped. The guard got control of himself first. “You can’t be mated to a vicious animal. Your father won’t allow it.” He eyed Mair. “If this is true, why doesn’t anyone know about it?” He kept the gun aimed at Caleb. “I think it’s a lie. Stanley, get the prince out of here.”

Rage rolled off Mair. His mate started to glow. “Look at my eyes. They tell it all.”

Both men gaped at Mair. “How can this be?”

“It just is. Are we going, or do I stay here with my mate?” Mair raised a sarcastic brow. Caleb could still feel the anger simmering under his mate’s skin.

“I have to call the king.” With shaky hands, the guard made the phone call. After a moment yelling could be heard coming through the phone.

The phone was handed to Mair. “Yes. It’s true, father. Do you still need to see me?” Mair’s tone was still filled with anger.

“Now more than ever. Get your ass on the chopper right now.” The king’s words were easy for them all to hear.

“Not without my mate.”

“You can’t bring a killer here to the house,” the king yelled sharply.

Mair’s glow brightened. “Caleb is not a killer. If he can’t come then I’m not going to come either.”

There was a long pause and Caleb could picture the man trying to figure a way to get his son home alone. That wasn’t going to happen. From what he’d learned from his mate, they would probably lock Mair up in the brightest place they could create. The sun would never stop him from getting to his mate. Their lack of knowledge about vampires would serve him well.

“Your supposed mate can’t travel in the sunlight, can he? Just come home and we’ll talk about it.” The king sounded smug.

“Caleb will be fine. It’s both of us or none of us.”

“Fine, you can bring him.” The king sounded defeated.

He wasn’t naïve enough to believe that the king wouldn’t be ready for war when they showed up. Because of a rogue vampire, Caleb was going to have a hell of a time convincing his mate’s family that not all vampires were bloodthirsty animals.

After they got into the chopper, Caleb noticed that both of the king’s men looked skyward and their lips moved in silent prayer. He rolled his eyes.

The trip was uneventful. The fear and sweat coming from the king’s men stank up the chopper and made the trip worse than it should have been.
